Fish welfare and losses during the production cycle

EAS EATiP Report coverDuring the recent AE2015 event in Rotterdam, EAS and the European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform (EATiP) organised a panel discussion on fish welfare and losses during the production cycle - to define issues and identify research needs.

The summary report of this panel is available here. It covers issues including documenting welfare, biomass control, predator control, anaesthetics, fish medicines and stress management and operational welfare indicators. It also provides an overview of associated research needs.

PhD position in “Spread mechanisms of sealice in open sea-based salmon aquaculture”

A PhD position is available at the Department of Biology. The appointment has duration of 3 years with the possibility of until 1 year extension with 25% teaching duties in agreement with the department.
The position is financed by NTNU and has a special responsibility for the internal funded pilot program in “Environmental interactions of sea based aquaculture”.

PhD position: Inclusive value chain models for area based aquaculture certification

Based at the Environmental Policy Group (ENP) at Wageningen University in the Netherlands and Prince of Songkla University in Thailand, you will conduct independent research on the potential for inclusive area-based business models for sustainable aquaculture in Thailand, Vietnam and Bangladesh. You will develop your research around questions related to how the contract conditions and value chain arrangements controlled by retailers in Europe and Southeast Asia, and regional trade policies under ASEAN, can lead to greater inclusion of vulnerable households through area-based aquaculture management and certification. Your scholarship is a ‘sandwich’ construction, meaning you will spend half your time between Wageningen University and Prince of Songkla University. More info here

PhD Scholarship in Lipid Nutrition within Aquaculture

A three-year PhD-scholarship within aquaculture is vacant at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources, DTU Aqua, Section for Aquaculture located at North Sea Research Centre, Hirtshals, Denmark.
The position is available from 1st  December  2015 or according to mutual agreement. Deadline for application is 15th  October 2015.

5 PhD scholarships - SANFEED doctoral programme

The SANFEED Programme (Sustainable Animal Nutrition and Feeding) is a new Doctoral ANIMAL SCIENCE Programme in an INDUSTRIAL SETTING funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), coordinated by the Abel Salazar Institute for Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto, and involving 10 industrial partners and 2 research centers.

EcoAqua Summer School – Ecosystem based Aquaculture

The four-day event will facilitate discussion and exchange of information between European Research Area members, specially the ones from Overseas Regions and Overseas Countries and territories on current aquaculture issues dealing with marine spatial planning,  ecosystem interactions and aquaculture development in coastal areas.
This scientific and technical course will be organized around specific modules focusing on:
Aquaculture Development in Coastal Areas; Health and Welfare; Breeding and Genetics; Marine Spatial Planning; Ecosystem Interactions

2015 EcoAqua Workshop

The EcoAqua Workshop on the Application of an Ecosystem Approach for the development of Sustainable Aquaculture in Overseas Regions and Overseas Countries and Territories will take place in Las Palmas from the 13 to the 16th of July.

The objectives of the workshop are to:
1.    Analyse the status and issues of Aquaculture in ORs and OCTs
2.    Define Guidelines to foster the Development of Sustainable Aquaculture under an Ecosystem Approach.
